And I have noticed the Light and Heavy Armour skills increasing quite frequently.
You may be right because the first thing since patch I did was upgrade all my equipped armour to legendary or flawless, same with weapons. I do tend to want to get to level 15-20 pretty quickly before I enter any cities and I get some decent loot instead of cardboard armor, rust iron swords, costume jewelry and a handful of pennies from clearing out a cave! Less time making decisions and less time gazing around at the countryside. I know my first few playthrougjs it seemed to take me forever to level, but now I level rather quickly, probably just seems that way as I am playing much faster. If your armor is improved you can take more damage and it will improve faster. If your weapons are much better you do more damage per attack and get more points.
Smithing in particular can make you progress faster. Even though you don't plan to put any perks into most skills it's still beneficial to be able to do some things (such as enchanting, lock picking, or improving gear through smithing).The only thing I can think of is as skills get higher you get more points towards leveling as you progress in the skill. The best approach (though time consuming) is to try to maintain a constant level across all your skills. You may not have enough helpful secondary skills, such as alchemy, restoration, etc to make adventuring easier.
